Brasilia - Space Town

Brasilia is not on the radar of many tourists to Brazil. It's hard to reach, far from the coast, and pretty isolated from the rest of the country. But despite being home to some very corrupt senators, the city is a modern design enthusiasts dream come true. In a way the place looks like a movie set, but it's worth the trip.

Andrew Gabor - Call me

More great work by way of Zach Fletcher. The stuff below is by Andrew Gabor (whom I have not had the pleasure of meeting). Andrew, I could not find you on the internet so if you're out there, call me. I'd love to showcase more of your work.

Enjoy.

A plausible finish by Charles Bukowski

There ought to be a place to go

When you can't sleep

Or you're tired getting drunk

And the grass doesn't work anymore

And I don't mean to go to

Hash or Cocaine

I mean a place to go

Besides a death that's waiting

And a love that doesn't work

Anymore.

There ought to be a place to go

When you can't sleep

Besides a tv set or a movie

Or a newspaper

Or a novel about a woman

With her clit in her throat.

It's not having that place to go

That creates the people in madhouses

And the suicides.

I suppose what most people do

When there isn't any place to go

Is to go to someplace or something

That hardly satisfies them,

And this ritual tends to sandpaper them,

Into a dullness where they can relax

With out hope.

Those faces you see everyday

On the streets

Were not created entirely without

Thought: Be kind to them:

They have

Escaped.

Vida de Campo

I am slowly fulfilling my destiny of becoming a true country gentleman. Below are pictures of the family spread in Mato Grosso, Brazil: Fazenda Colina Verde.

Digging up yuca roots.

Yes, that is El Capitan on horseback doing his best 'patron' pose.

Recent Obsessions - 80's era German Cars

It's nothing new that the eighties are back and stronger than ever and that goes for 80's era cars as well. Check out the Porsche and BMW below (both of which I was lucky enough to possess for a short time). These cars are fine examples of solid, strong, German engineering and beautiful in their own ways. But for some strange reason their also tragically flawed. I don't know how to describe it, but I guess the right word would be Aryan. And not in the Brotherhood kind of way, more in the rigidly superior to everyone else kind of way. To put it another way, it's like these vehicles are the Rutger Hauers of the car world.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
Time to die."

The New Art

Fantastic new art from a great New York/Maryland artist, actor, poet who supplies his own soundtrack (will add later) for his paintings - Zach Fletcher. Look this man up. Check out his shit, listen to his shit, go see his shows.

Welcome to Year Zero

This is the first post of my newest project - Castro's Last Stand. The purpose of this blog is not only to rant about the things that interest me, but also to provide support for up-and-coming artists in all forms of media. As future posts are added hopefully you will learn more about me and my life. Right.

A few ideas of where I want to take this site and some of the topics I would like to cover:

- Travel
- New Artists (painters, poets, photographers, etc.)
- My obsession with cars, motorcycles, boats, anything with an internal combustion engine
- Men's Fashion
- Brazil (land of my birth) & Cattle Ranching
- Modern design & architecture
- Current events
- Watch fetish
- Brand management & positioning
- Film & Movie Reviews

For now, I leave you with this: I took it during a recent trip to Brasilia. Very cool ultra-modern city that does not feel like the rest of Brazil.
